Wedding Gift Dos and Don’ts

Wedding season

We just got back from wedding number two of five for this year. Last year, we had six weddings, and four the year before. After this year, I think it’ll quiet down for a little while, but I’m honestly not complaining. I love the opportunity to travel, get dressed up, and celebrate love! One of my favorite things about wedding season is choosing the perfect wedding gift, but I know that not everyone enjoys shopping for gifts, so I’m sharing a few dos & don’ts to help make the process easier:

DO: Decide on a budget before you shop. Consider things like how well you know the couple, how much you’re already spending on the wedding and wedding-related events,  and if you’ve already gotten them a present for their engagement and/or a shower. Then pick your price range.

DON’T: Ignore the registry. Registries are like cheat sheets for wedding gifts. The couple chose the things on their registry because they actually want them, so get them what they want! Most couples link to their registries from their wedding websites, but if you can’t find the links, stores like Bed, Bath & Beyond, Bloomingdales and Williams Sonoma have registry search features on their sites too.

DO: Choose something meaningful. Although it may seem like you can’t be creative when you shop the registry, you totally can. I like to pick something that reminds me of memories I have with the couple or that I know will help them make more memories as husband and wife.

DO: Find out if the couple has a Zola registry. Zola is a registry site that I wish had been around when we got married five years ago! With Zola, couples can still register for more traditional gifts, but they can also include experiences and cash to go towards things like their honeymoon or a new home. Last weekend’s wedding couple had a Zola registry and we decided to contribute towards their honeymoon fund. It’s so nice to have alternatives if you don’t want to just buy them another “thing.”

DON’T: Forget a card! I love stocking up on cards when I’m at TJMaxx or Marshalls. They have so many beautiful cards at a fraction of the price you’d normally find them…and I always buy more than I need! Since your registry gift will most likely be mailed directly to the couple, bringing a card with a nice message to the wedding itself is all you need.

This post was written in partnership with Zola, but all opinions and tips are my own.
