Summer Staples

Since Memorial Day is the official start of summer, I figured it would be a great time to share some of my summer staples! These are the things that I wear regularly during warmer months. They’re versatile and timeless, so for the ones that may cost a little more, they’re worth the investment. While it’s fun to shop the trends, there are certain things that you need to build the foundation of your wardrobe. You’ll notice that a lot of these are things I own in neutrals, which gives me lots of opportunity to add color and pattern in other ways.

Denim

Denim shorts are a summer must-have! I have two favorite pairs, one save and one splurge. The less expensive pair is high-rise and a little longer length. But, I love the vintage wash of the splurge pair, so it depends on what’s important to you and your budget.

Quite possibly my most-worn item in the spring and summer is a denim jacket. I actually have three (light wash, dark wash, and white), and they’re all from the same place and under $50. A denim jacket is the perfect light layer for cooler days and nights, and it goes with everything.

If you want to take any summer look up a notch, you need a pair of white jeans. I searched for a long time to find a pair that was flattering, and thick enough to not be see-through, but still comfortable. I actually ended up ordering a pair of Madewell jeans from Poshmark, and I love them. Mine are high-rise, although I’m honestly not sure if they’re the 9″ or 10″. They also offer a curvy fit, which is a little extra flattering.

Shoes

To be honest, I’m mostly wearing sneakers right now, which works well with the fact that I really need a pedicure. White sneakers are my favorite for summer, and I have a few pairs. I like to have one that’s sportier, and (at least) one that looks a little more polished.

When it comes to sandals, I wear this pair the most. I have them in white, and I love that they can go casual or dressy. I’m already on my second pair because I wore the first ones so much. They also come in gold and I’m thinking of ordering those too!

Tops

I like to have a lot of variety when it comes to summer tops, and this is where I often embrace the trends. But, one thing I’ve realized over the years is that quality matters, even for basics. Everlane makes my favorite t-shirts, and I own them in v-neck and crew.

Like denim, a chambray shirt is another goes-with-everything option. The lightweight material can take you from day to night. You can tuck it in, tie the bottom or leave it untucked depending on the look you’re going for and what you wear with it.

Dresses

I already shared my love of flowy maxi dresses, and they are definitely having a moment. But, equally comfortable and easier for the hottest days is the t-shirt dress. I wasn’t sure if I could wear them, and for a while I would only buy ones with defined waists. But, I’ve come to love the shapeless ones too because they’re just so comfortable. They’re also more forgiving than you might think, so give them a try.

I’m sure there are more, but this is a great place to start! Let me know what else you’re shopping for this summer!
