What the world is going through right now is incredibly frightening. We’re being challenged in so many ways, and society as a whole will never be the same. But, one thing is happening that gives me hope: we’re showing our humanity.
Many of us are working from home, taking work calls on video and literally giving our co-workers a look into our homes. Pets, children and significant others make regular cameos. Doorbells ring and Internet connections skip out. It’s all become part of the “new normal.”
We start our meetings by asking how everyone is doing, physically and mentally, and we actually take time to hear the answer. We are forced to confront work-life balance, and make sure to switch work mode off with enough time to take care of the other parts of our lives. Teachers and parents are stepping up to the challenge of virtual education.
Each night, in New York City and elsewhere, we join together to cheer for people who really deserve it. Not reality TV stars or athletes, but healthcare workers who risk their lives every day to save others. Rivalries are forgotten and cities are united.
We’re changing from our pajamas to sweats or leggings…and back to pajamas. Many of us, myself included, have gone weeks without doing our hair or makeup. Influencers are sharing more candid photos taken on iPhones, and unabashedly learning silly dances for the Internet. Celebrities too.
We’re checking in with loved ones more often and keeping in better touch with friends and family who may live far away. People are embracing creativity, cooking more and trying new things. Walks outdoors have made us appreciate fresh air and nature. We’re learning what really lights us up.
Yes, this time is scary as hell. We don’t know when this will be over. It will probably take a while, and it may happen in phases. We don’t know what our world will look like then. But, I really hope we continue to show our humanity.
