I wasn’t so sure about maxi dresses when they first came onto the scene a few years ago, but I’ve learned that they can look good on petites (and pears) too.
For petites, the key is finding one that is a good length. I’ve found that there are more options available than there used to be, you just have to be willing to search and be sure to try on before you buy. When I bought my first maxi dress, I found one that I absolutely loved, but I was stepping on it. So, because I had gotten it on sale, I decided it was worth it to fork over the money to have it shortened at the tailor. You want a dress that skims the top of your feet. It’s okay if it covers your shoes, but you don’t want it on the floor.
For my fellow pear-shaped ladies, look for maxis that are flowy, not body hugging. Straight jersey will make you look either shapeless or lumpy. If you can find one that has a belt or sash at the natural waist, that’s great too. You want to highlight the smallest part of you.
The dress below is a new purchase from Marshalls. I love the pattern and the colors, and it has a lovely knotted one shoulder. There is a thin strap on the other side, but I may end up tucking that in when I wear it. The waist is defined by a long roped tie. This dress is just the right length, and you can still see my cute sandals. Are you into the maxi dress trend?
