When you’re in your 20s and 30s, you have at least one year when you feel like all you’re doing on weekends is going to weddings. We got married well before most of our friends, but things are starting to pick up. Next year, we already have four sets of nuptials on the books…including two on back-to-back weekends in February. The first is here in New York (where we’ll be in the depths of winter) and the second is in Northern California (where I hope I won’t need a heavy coat). Although spring and summer wedding style is a little easier, fall and winter weddings can be fun to dress for too. Some tips:
- Cocktail dresses often cost a little more, so if you’re making a small investment, you want to choose something versatile. Spend a little more on a dress you’ll get a lot of wear out of, and then have fun with jewelry and accessories.
- If you don’t want to spend a lot, check out discount stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls or think about renting a designer dress from somewhere like Rent the Runway.
- You can never go wrong with black, but navy and jewel tones are also seasonably appropriate and chic.
- For added elegance, look for lace. Bows and beaded belts are great touches too.
- Pears: As always, I recommend an A-line or fit and flare silhouette with a defined waist. Detailing on the bodice will draw the eye up (which is good), so if you’re looking at mixed media or color-blocked dresses, always opt for a less busy bottom half.
- A tailored wool coat is the perfect topper for winter. Bring along a pashmina or shrug if you’re worried about temperatures inside.
These six dresses are a great place to start your shopping. I’m especially loving the navy and purple pieces in the top row. Which one’s your fave?
