I am incredibly fortunate to have wonderful relationships with both of my parents. As an only child, I got to spend plenty of time with each of them growing up, and I loved that I had them all to myself. My personality is a unique combination of both of theirs, and you can definitely see their influence in how I live my life. But, since Father’s Day is coming up soon (June 18), I wanted to share a little bit about how I’m kind of a daddy’s girl.
My dad is a rabbi. He retired a few years ago, but until then, he was the spiritual leader of two different congregations over the course of my life. Being the clergy’s kid can be difficult at times, but I learned to love the sense of community, and I always took great pride in my dad’s leadership. As a kid, it was funny to see my friends’ reactions when they would see him at home, relaxed in casual clothes. I think a lot of people forget that even rabbis are humans too, but to me he was still dad.
One of the other things my dad taught me is how to be a sports fan. Football has always been our favorite and we’ve watched countless games together, both in person and over the phone. I know all about the rules and the players, and I can yell at the TV with the best of them. I love my teams whether they win or lose, because that’s what being a true fan means, and I know that loyalty is dictated by your heart, not where you live. Some dads might have been disappointed to have a girl and not even bothered to share their love of sports with her, but not my dad.
Another important lesson my dad taught me is to always save room for dessert. We both have a serious sweet tooth, and we would always be up for seeking out the local favorites when we travelled as a family. Now, Dad’s not supposed to have as much sugar, but I know his love of dessert hasn’t faded, and I’m grateful that he passed his “expertise” on to me!
Finding the right gift for Father’s Day can be tough. You want to give something useful and meaningful, without being too boring. Thankfully, Harry’s sent me their special Father’s Day Shave Set to give my dad, and it was the perfect addition to the tablet lap desk I found for him (he brings his iPad everywhere!). The set comes in an easy-to-wrap box and includes all of the Harry’s essentials for only $30. Most dads shave regularly (or at least groom their beards!), but they would never think to treat themselves to a nice shaving set, which makes it a great gift. You can also get it engraved to make it extra personal. Definitely check out Harry’s if you’re stumped about what to get your dad, and most of all, make sure to thank him for everything he’s taught you over the years.
Disclosure: This post was written in partnership with Harry’s. I was sent a complimentary shave set as a gift for my dad, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
