As I mentioned in Monday’s post, we spent the weekend on Long Island celebrating my dad’s retirement. Saturday night was the main event, and I chose to wear a new dress that was both flattering and comfortable. Although the dress itself wasn’t the boldest thing I’ve ever worn, it made me feel good, and that’s exactly what I needed to have the courage to get up in front of 150+ people and give a speech. When it comes to words, I prefer to write them, but I figured that my dad was only going to retire once and I really wanted him (and everybody else) to know how proud I am of him and all that he’s done in his career.
Now, I want to let you in on a little secret about shopping for dresses and skirts in this pattern. If you’re a pear like me, or you’re otherwise looking to emphasize your waist, pick a piece that has the diagonal stripes (aka chevron) pointing toward your waist. Like an arrow, the eye is drawn to the narrowest point, instead of down and out, with the widest part of the V around your hips. A belt helps too. Also of note, I brought flats to change into, but ended up wearing my heels the whole night! Make sure you check out this pair from Naturalizer. They are a must-buy for summer occasions!
