Thanksgiving has come and gone, and the holiday season is upon us. It's a wonderful time of year, full of family & friends, lots of bright lights, sparkle, gift-giving, yummy food and warm sweaters. But, it's important to remember that there is more than one holiday that occurs at this time of year. By all means, share your Christmas traditions and preparations. Run Christmas-themed promotions and giveaways, and showcase Christmas-appropriate outfits. But, remember that not all of your readers and/or customers celebrate Christmas. Some people, like me, will be lighting the menorah instead of decking the halls. Some will be doing both. Still others will be celebrating Kwanzaa.
It can be hard to live in a Christmas-crazed world. It takes over radio stations, coffee shops, department stores…and often it seems like the entire city is Christmas consumed. There are trees and lights everywhere, and sometimes an electric menorah in the window. I appreciate the people who say “Happy Holidays!” and the occasional store that goes with a winter theme instead of red and green. Don't get me wrong, Christmas is great, and I look forward to it every year. But, instead of figgy pudding, I'll be eating Chinese food and enjoying a quiet day. That's what Christmas means to me.
If you don't know much about the holidays you don't celebrate, now is a great time to reach out to friends and fellow bloggers to learn more. As the daughter of a rabbi, I was kind of born into the role of teaching others about my religion and it's something that I truly love to do. To that end, if any NYC-based bloggers want to come over and play dreidel, let me know!
Happy Holidays to all!
