I already posted a couple of outfits from our upstate getaway, but I wanted to share more about where we stayed and what we did. Every fall, we try to plan at least one weekend away. Growing up in New England, this was always my favorite time of year, and I need my annual dose of foliage.
Where We Stayed
This year, we decided to stay in New York, just in case COVID restrictions changed. Bones wasn’t going to be with us, which gave us more flexibility for where to stay. I looked at a bunch of options, but fell in love with the first one, and nothing else measured up. Let me tell you, it lived up to the hype! It was the perfect lakefront cabin on a secluded street, but still accessible enough to civilization. One of the best parts was waking up to a view of the lake surrounded by colorful trees. We also sat out back and read one afternoon, and it was so incredibly peaceful. We were about a two hour drive from New York City in Sullivan County.
What We Did
We tried to balance relaxing with exploring, and I think we did a pretty good job. One of our favorite fall activities is apple picking, but unfortunately, many orchards ended picking season early this year. We went to Kelder’s Farm anyway, and still had a great time. They have a pumpkin patch, corn maze, apple cannon, and lots of other fun activities. We also really enjoyed their apple cider and donuts, and bought some pre-picked apples to bring home.
Another fun thing to do upstate is visit the breweries and wineries. We did one of each (on different days). Roscoe Beer Co. was our Saturday afternoon spot. We had an indulgent bar food lunch, with beer for Rob and house-made root beer for me. There was live music in the beer garden where they have plenty of seating and a fire pit to stay warm.
On Sunday, we stopped by Baldwin Vineyards as we slowly made our way back to the city. It’s a family-run farm winery that specializes in fruit wines. I really enjoyed both their Caramel Apple Sangria and the Spiced Apple Wine. Their tasting room is open Thursday through Monday, and they have a gorgeous backyard where you can sit and enjoy your wine.
I also really wanted to drive through and photograph a covered bridge, so we found one in between some of our stops in Livingston Manor. Driving everywhere with the trees changing colors was such a treat, and I think Rob might have gotten tired of me saying “It’s so pretty!”
Where We Ate
The area we stayed in isn’t particularly known for its food, but we definitely didn’t go hungry! I did a lot of research ahead of time because we wanted to be sure that anywhere we went had sufficient safety precautions in place. For quick meals near the cabin, we ate at Brew for burgers our first night, and grabbed lunch from The Krispy Apple 2 the next day.
My favorite meal was pizza from The Dale, which we picked up for dinner on Friday night. I got “The White,” and I highly recommend!
We had lunch on Saturday at the brewery, and dinner at Aroma Thyme Bistro. I had a salmon and corn risotto, which was really good. Sunday, we stopped at Jace & Bailey’s on our way to the winery. The food was good and it was in a cute little town. I was hoping to support the local bookstore, but it was unfortunately closed.
It was such a great trip, and I’m so grateful we were able to make a fall getaway happen this year. Any questions, let me know, and make sure to pin this post for later!
